Arjun Mk1 MBT: Surviving & Winning

The above illustration graphically illustrates how exactly the Arjun Mk1 MBT will be employed in a future armoured campaign, as visualised by the Indian Army's Directorate General of Mechanised Forces. It is in such a scenario that the Arjun Mk1 MBT will be subjected to competitive firepower and mobility trials against the T-90S MBT early next year. As the Arjun Mk1 comes equipped with a battlespace management system (BMS) and the T-90S does not, the former will have a decisive edge against the T-90S when it comes to enhanced situational awareness, as the Arjun Mk1 will be able to get real-time SITREPS on enemy dispositions and movements from the Army's Corps-level BMS (which in turn derive their real-time inputs from UAVs) and be able to engage in decisive manoeuvre warfare of the type not possible at the moment with either the T-90S or the T-72M1 Combat Improved Ajeya MBTs. No wonder the Indian Army is coy about subjecting the Arjun Mk1 MBT and T-90S to competitive performance trials. It's that simple--Prasun K. Sengupta

Hey, nice article, though a small one. Keep it coming!

ha ha ha ha ha hilarious. sengupta you have outdone dishonesty to ludicrous proportions this time. this is simply a formation diagram from a previous exercise (desert strike?) and has absolutely no bearing on the arjun/bhishma trials. i have a copy of this diagram in a press handout and it was given out some three years ago. and incidentally they are not going to be mobility trials you idiot. why dont you STFU if you dont know anything.

it's unbelievable how much some people can lie. for once do something truthful and honest in your life.

@Prasun

LOL I hope this doesn't wrap up your coverage on Arjun :-p

Btw did you make that diagram yourself?

Anonymous said...

Vishal, what happened to your blogs?

Prasun K Sengupta said...

To Anon@11PM: And you for once get it inside your thick skull that the Indian Army has to date never given out any 'Formation Diagram' to anyone from the press or to anyone outside the Army. Secondly, that illustration is not a formation diagram but a graphic illustration of a scenario likely to be enacted during a land campaign. If you cannot get your terminologies right then you STFU! Or better still, upload the so-called press handout that you claim to have received three years ago and for once do something truthful and honest in your life!

To Max: LOL, don't worry, I have a thick enough skin to tolerate such delinquent retards.

Vishal, thanks for your inputs.

moron sengupta doesnt know his ass from his elbow. it's confirmed. this was an exercise diagram for operation desert strike which took place in pokhran field firing range (pffr) in 2005. this deceitful piece of trash is trying to pass it off as some prophetic insight into how the t-90/arjun trials will be. from which angle does this have anything to do with proposed trials? bloody lying cheat.

Nice to see people missing my blog.

@Prasun

No no, you misunderstood me. I meant that: I hope this little article does not wrap up your coverage of the Arjun / T90 "scandal" for we're expecting muccch more than this LOL. I know you're think skin and you won't get dismayed by any sort of comments. I saw it in Ajai's blog :-)

@vishal
Oh, I just realised too, you quit blogging? why?

"I have a thick enough skin to tolerate such delinquent retards"

Not just tolerate, but take them on. It's good you take on such questions as it increases our understanding on the matter, reduces our doubts.

Although it may be headache for uou? LOL

@Prasun

Two other questions (from your helicopter article): short answers will do.

1. In what stage exactly is the LOH's development? Has development started or is it still in proposal stage?

2. Secondly I asked this before and got some answers from others but I'm not too convinced: Why does the LCH have its optical turret on top of the nose? This configuration obstructs the pilot's view of targets directly below the chopper especially during ascending flight. All other attack helos have the optical turret either tucked into the nose or underneath.

Please enlighten.

Its just that i have 'unshared' my profile. My blog's still there, but have a few exams lined up. Will be back blogging next week perhaps. Hope to churn out some good content.

To Anon@7:29PM: Instead of claiming confirmation where's your copy of the so-called 'formation diagram'? Where have you uploaded it? Show it to all of us here (by posting the link where you've uploaded your version of events)and let all fellow bloggers judge for themselves what exactly needs confirmation: your assertions or your decapitating brain-damage.

Max, regretably, the LOH issue and its reporting by the mass-media has been misleading. Kindly allow me to explain further. The requirement is for a SINGLE single-engined platform to perform two roles: 1) all-weather observation as an Army aeroscout (replacing the SA.315B Cheetah/Lama observation helicopters used for field artillery fire direction and observation of the forward battle area where the contact battle is being fought) and 2) light utility for transportation of battlefield commanders, senior IAF commanders, and casualty evacuation, which is now being carried out by the SA.316B Chetak/Alouette III helicopters and are known as LUH. Now, with regard to Role 1, this can today be done by UAVs as well as the LCH snd WLRs. There's really no need for a single-engined LOH and the upgraded Cheetahs (re-engined with the new and uprated TM333-2B engine and featuring a lightweight glass cockpit and belly-mounted lighhtweight FLIR turret, and called Cheetal) will be excellent all-weather high-altitude observation-cum-casualty evacuation helicopters. It must be borne in mind here that ONLY in India are such helicopters required as the IAF-operated Cheetahs are routinely operating at altitudes between 10,000 feet and 22,000 feet, whereas helicopters like the AS.350B3 and Bell 407 were designed to operate efficiently only up to 9,500 feet altitude. Therefore, even if there is a re-tendering exercise by Army/IAF HQs there's no way a winner will emerge as the Cheetah/Cheetals will remain unbeatable in terms of high-altitude performance. The same goes for the upgraded Chetaks (called Chetan) that can serve as unbeatable casualty evacuation and light utility platforms at high altitudes (up to 16,000 feet). Now, for operating in the plains a single-engined variant of the Dhruv ALH will be able to serve as an excellent LUH and I therefore believe that both the Army and IAF should immediately commit themselves financially to the single-engined Dhruv-derived LUH and the twin-engined LCH, and totally do away with importing single-engined LOH/LUH platform. At the same time, both the Army and IAF should also lend their total support to the Chetan/Cheetal programmes and I must add here that there are at least 300 such Alouette III/Lama helicopters worldwide that could be upgraded by HAL to the Chetan/Cheetal configuration. This is definitely a profitable business proposition that needs to be actively promoted.

Now, with regard to your second query, positioning of the LCH's turret containing optronic sensors is not an issue since the turret is swivelling both in azimuth and elevation/depression and therefore there will be no degradation of the aircrew's field-of-view and situationasl awareness. The definitive design of the LCH, will also have roof-mounted millimetre-wave radar to detect and track moving metallic objects. And for terrain-hugging flight profiles, the aircrew will rely on helmet-mounted night vision goggles for surveying the terrain below and ahead of the LCH.

Vishal, here's wishing you the very best of luck for the forthcoming exams. Rock on!

One more point, Max, regarding the Arjun MBT and LCH. These two machines can be used together as a hunter-killer combination and when communicating with one other via the Army's newly-deployed battlespace management system (BMS), the Arjun MBT crew's situational awareness will improve to such an extent that the MBT will be able to position itself to attack targets with a decisive element of surprise, since the LCH will be able to detect the hostile ground-based targets up to 15km away (when equipped with a roof-mounted millimetre-wave radar). This cannot be achieved at the moment with either the T-90S or upgraded T-72M1s as they do not have the BMS on-board. Thus, the acquisition and deployment of the Arjun MBT should not be seen as just a standalone platform-centric exercise, but as a system that forms part of a network of deployed systems (both airborne and ground-based) all glued together seamlessly via the BMS. The end result then is a superior network-centric force projection capability.

Hi PKS Can u pls let me know whats better, is it WZ10 or upcoming LCH? you r the best guy to ask since u have been to that chinese show.

pls dont tease my sengupta my heart aches

Prasun K Sengupta said...

To Shriya: One cannot really compare the ZW-10A and LCH because the ZW-10A is a dedicated heavy attack helicopter, while the LCH is a 'combat' helicopter whose main role will be to engage and destroy UAVs, UCAVs and hostile LOHs/LUHs. The ZW-10A is optimised for attacking armoured vehicles located at least 6km away, while the LCH will be able to do that out to only 4km, but will be superior to the ZW-10A in terms of operating at higher altitudes and engaging hostile airborne helicopters.

Prasun, is it possible for the Arjun LCH combo to take out enemy tanks using LAHAT. That's the LCH which can detect enemy tanks at a distance can provide the info to Arjun and Arjun firing the LAHAT to it's max range of 5 km to take out the Target.

Dada,

Can u give me tech specifications of Shourya. Is this at last a good missile to come out of DRDO. Given mach 5 etc. Thanks Anjan Sengupta

If not here, pls mail me: anjansengupta@gmail.com

Thanks

@Prasun

Thanks for the lecture.

About Arjun's superiority I've heard that one too many times, but unfortunately it's not getting through the heads of the people it should be :-(

Anna: Interested? Please buy T90S and reject Arjun.

Babu: OK.Arjun out, T90 and Anna in.

moral of the story: Indian babus think about their pockets and dicks first and country last.

Prasun K Sengupta said...

To Anon@7:28PM: Yes, it is possible for both the Arjun MBT & LCH to be armed with the LAHAT ATGM and both platforms can fire the LAHAT. In fact, the Dhruv ALH armed with LAHAT was earlier being promoted in countries like Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador and now Turkey. Therefore the LAHAT has already been integrated with the Dhruv ALH and could be on board the LCH as well. It is lighter than the air-launched Nag ATGM as well.

Prasun K Sengupta said...

To Anjan: The Shourya is as good a theatre-level land attack PGM as its Chinese counterparts. By next February during Aero India 09 further technical/performance parameters will be available from the DRDO and the 2nd test-firing of the PGM is also likely to be conducted then.
